You have to arrive by a 20-minute ferry ride and travel by golf cart as no cars are allowed on the island.

Beach house vacation rentals provide spectacular views of the ocean and harbor, dolphins playing in the water, large cargo vessels traveling to and from the Port of Wilmington, direct access to one of the best island beaches, maritime forest, or the golf course while catching the ocean breezes from open decks or wraparound covered porches. Many expansive front decks and covered screen porches are equipped with comfortable lounge and rocking chairs, a small dining table, plus other furniture and maybe a hammock for napping.

Guests can purchase a temporary membership to the upper class Bald Head Island Country Club and have fun in the championship golf course, go for croquet, tennis, or swimming. Other amenities include restaurants including the Pelicatessen, lounge, and a children’s playground.

You can canoe along the creek marshes, wander through the protected forests to see exotic birds and deer, or witness an exciting hatching at loggerhead turtle nesting sites.

You can take a 90-minute informative tour of the island which may also include the cost of the ferry trip, admission to the old Baldy Lighthouse and its small but interesting historical Smith Island Museum, a chance to see the gorgeous homes, and perhaps a bicycle rental to see more of the island. You can climb the stairs to the top of the lighthouse for a marvelous view and learn how the lighthouse keepers lived in that tiny house.
