Choosing Crikvenica in Croatia for our family getaway may seem unconventional compared to more popular tourist spots like Dubrovnik or Split.

This is our fourth time to travel to this scenic country in southeast Europe. Our first vacation was in Marušici. Our second and third visits were in Podstrana, which is quite a popular place.

However, this charming town held special appeal for us, for three main reasons.

1. Convenience

We opted for Crikvenica due to its proximity to our starting point in Prague, making our road trip more manageable compared to longer travel times to other Croatian destinations.

2. Sandy beaches

While past trips to Croatia’s pebbled beaches were enjoyable, we sought a sandy shoreline for our son’s comfort.

I did some research which led me to Crikvenica, and it did not disappoint, offering a beach experience sans the need for water shoes.

3. Affordability

When considering travel costs, Croatia emerges as a more affordable option for our family than the other European countries due to the cost-effective land transportation available, making it a budget-friendly road trip destination for us.

Despite some friends commenting about Croatia’s rising costs, “Oh! Croatia is already expensive!” we found our stay in Crikvenica to be reasonably priced, allowing us to relish a memorable holiday without breaking the bank. Thus, the travel cost depends on which city you’re in.

It is worth noting that tourism is flourishing in Croatia. Thanks to its picturesque landscapes that served as filming locations for the HBO show Game of Thrones.

My boss even said that it was better to go to Italy. But we went to Croatia anyway as we have visited Italy last year and a few years ago as well.

How did we spend our time in Crikvenica?

Our daily routine in Crikvenica was a simple yet fulfilling one.

Mornings were spent soaking up the sun on the beach where most people would hang out. We would bring our umbrella, picnic mats, food, and drinks, although one can buy supplies nearby.

Afternoons offered moments of rest and relaxation. Lunch would be spent in our apartment.

Evenings were reserved for seaside dining, watching breathtaking sunsets, and leisurely walks along the quieter shores to savor the tranquility.

The restaurants are usually full at night when most people are out for dining and partying. This is the best time when one can relax and enjoy the scenic views as most cafes and hotels offer a great dining experience by the beachfront.

Venturing into the city center, where the huge towering Ferris wheel is, we explored Crikvenica’s vibrant culture, mingling with locals, and taking in entertainment offerings like live music and local crafts. The bustling atmosphere added a delightful dynamic to our vacation experience.

Crikvenica, along with Dramalj, Jadranovo, and Selce, is among the quaint and charming coastal towns in the Crikvenica Riviera.

This nine-day escape to Crikvenica provided us with a much-needed family bonding opportunity away from the busyness of work and school. It also allowed us to unwind amidst nature’s beauty, fostering cherished memories of simplicity and togetherness that will last a lifetime.
